#53 Akihabara

Akihabara (also known as ‘Akiba’ for short) is an area of Tokyo famous for it’s encouragement of anime/manga obsessed fans by letting them all gather together in one location and sip coffee in places such as this:

If you like anime or if you’re wapanese (or both) you’ll love what Akiba has to offer – tons and tons of merchandise for you to gawk at, and/or spend your salary on.

I went into a few of these infamous shops, some where up to six floors high, and were completely filled with manga volumes, figurines, t-shirts, posters, books, trinkets, crockery, stationary and almost any souvenir you can think of. You’ll see a lot of the big names like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece, but you’ll also probably find almost any manga you have ever heard of.

I would have loved to have taken pictures, but they were prohibited indoors. On the bright side, there are two things I’ve learned from walking between the never-ending shelves of an otaku’s paradise:

  1. I would never make it as a manga artist because of the sheer volume of competition.
  2. There is a manga to suit every fetish… every fetish.
