#59 – Iga Ninja museum

It’s a proven fact that if you are a fan of Japan, you are very likely to also be a fan of ninjas. I mean, who wouldn’t be? They’re awesome.

A few weeks ago, I made the trip to the Iga Ninja Museum, in Mie prefecture. On display were various ninja techniques, tools and tricks.

The ticket also includes a tour of a ‘ninja’s house’. The kunoichi (female ninjas) gave us a guided tour of the trick doors, walls and hiding places a ninja would have in their humble abode should they ever be invaded by enemies.

There was also a rather entertaining Ninja show for an extra 200 yen, which was well worth the price to see a guy do backflips, chop a bamboo pole and throw ninja stars for real.

In the end, although there was lot’s to see, it was quite a short tour, and more fun and interesting rather than any sort of real Japanese cultural experience. It’s a great place to visit you’re in the area, but unless you’re a really hard core fan, it’s probably not worth going out of your way to get there.

Besides, there aren’t any real ninja’s at the museum, that would be a too obvious place to hide. A much better place would be right behind you.
